Dr. Cassandra TANSEY

Councillor for America (North)

Cassandra Marie Tansey is an associate clinical veterinarian in the Comparative Medicine Branch of the National Center for Emerging and Infectious Zoonotic Diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Despite being a fairly recent veterinary graduate, she has extensive leadership experience. She was active in organized veterinary medicine as a student at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, and served as President of her college’s Student Chapter of the AVMA. She was the first student director on the Board of the Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative (WVLDI), an organization established in 2013 with a vision to develop leaders for the benefit of the profession and to deliver on the promise of veterinary medicine to society. Dr. Tansey is currently a member of a number of professional organizations, including the AVMA, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, and the Association of Primate Veterinarians. Since beginning her current position in clinical laboratory animal medicine at the CDC, Dr. Tansey has served as the vice president of professional development of the CDC Young Professionals Network.
Dr. Tansey’s interest in public health and infectious disease has led to work in field epidemiology during an Epi-Aid investigation into an outbreak of Seould Hantavirus in 2017 as well as event-based surveillance for the International Task Force during the Zika response at the CDC in 2016. During her deployment, she interfaced effectively with international public health organizations such as the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the Pan American Health Organization. Dr. Tansey is eager to expand her efforts in the global arena and looks forward to the opportunity to represent North America on the WVA Council.
